Can't play Netflix on IE 8
I have an Acer Aspire 5517 with Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium and Verizon High Speed internet service. I also have Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox browsers. Here's my problem: When I want to play Netflix instantly through Firefox I just click on the Netflix icon, make a selection, and begin watching. Pretty simple so far, right?
However, when I want to play Netflix through IE 8 I get a screen telling me that I need to download Microsoft Silverlight in order to watch Netflix instantly. I have two problems with this: 1) I already have Silverlight installed, and 2) When I play along by uninstalling Silverlight and its download file I again try Netflix and get the same screen, this time heeding its message and downloading Silverlight as required. However, whenever the Netflix icon is clicked and a selection made I continue to get the screen requiring Silverlight to be downloaded. It's an infinite loop.
When I went to Microsoft Answers I got the run around and a defensive posture that indicated to me his primary goal was to avoid the idea that something could possibly be wrong with a Microsoft Product. He was defensive to the point of uselessness. After giving him several shots at solving the problem I said, "Looks like the solution is just to run it from Firefox and forget about IE 8 then, huh?". I never heard from him again. So I came here where hopefully no one has a vested interest.
Because I can simply run Netflix from Firefox, this has become a quest for knowledge rather than a quest to watch movies. Is it because I have 64 bit Win 7 and 32 bit IE 8? The guy from Microsoft said, "No", but as you may have guessed, by that time I no longer trusted him to be objective. So, I ask you the same question. Your responses would be greatly appreciated. Also, why is it so simple to play Netflix through Firefox and so impossible to play it through IE 8?
