    Monitor screen goes blank?
Hi, I have a hp dsktop w/a 17" lcd. Upon startup the lcd will show the correct desktop but only for about 3 seconds, it then goes blank. A few minutes later the lcd light goes from blue to yellow. if I just toggle the on/off switch it will still just quickly show the screen. I have an old crt that I hooked up and it seems to work fine. I have tried(not sure if done correctly) to remo ve the device and restart and reinstall the device. It never really tell me "you have new hardware" it just installs it or it will install the crt if thats connected. I have also tried reinstalling the drivers by the disk that came with the desktop. I have checked the power settings and they are all set to "never shut off" but it seems strange that the yellow standby or sleep/hibernate light goes on after a few minutes. I think the video card is good. I have not installed any new programs/hardware. I'm thinking about doing a total restore and seeing if that helps. Any ideas? I also checked the cable and its fine. Tx john

It looks like you did the proper steps to try and find something that maybe wrong with each device. With monitor, what happens when the yellow or amber light shows and then you use another monitor and it works, it would be something with the problem monitor - in crt monitors it is usually a bad capacitor in the monitor. Not really sure about the LCD side of things, but from what you have done, it indicates there is a problem with the lcd monitor itself and not drivers or video card.

Of course if under warranty, take it in.

When you hook monitors to pc's, you will not get new hardware found as windows itself will always use a default driver on startup to get the monitor to view, and if you have specialized drivers for your monitor, after a certain time during boot , windows will load that driver.

But it does look like the lcd
