I have two PC monitors, and wish to connect them to one computer. I need a monitor splitter to do the job. However, I don't just want the ones that show the exat same images on the two monitors, but the ones I can use them seprately. In other words, I want to be able to do different things on the two monitors, like watching a movie on one screen and then doing something else on the other, splitting the tasks. PLEASE HELP ME!! Please suggest a splitter that does the job.

Hello,

I run the setup you are suggesting right now on my computer, I have a special video card for this, if you just use a splitter, you will only get the same image on both monitors. You either need a video card set up for this, or you need two compatible video cards that can handle video processing and all that. Also, make sure your processor and everything can handle two video cards.

Thanks, I hesitated on buying a splitter for that reason. Do you know which video card I need? Can you suggest a cheap one because I don't really need high quality resolutions, but just to operate.
I also here that most of the latest video cards that come with the PC can do the job without buying extra things?? My PC is about 4 years old, does that work?

I would suggest an ATI card, they are good, but there are so many others... I'm sure there are many well-priced ones. Just remember sometimes they may have conflicts with each other (your old one and new one) or the mother board may not support it if the board is too old. I'm not really sure about the compatibility thing, so I would suggest asking someone who can really tell you what will work, etc... maybe someone here at Ask Me Help Desk can reply to this message and give you exact hardware that would work.

Also, many new video cards are compatible with operating two monitors, but they need to have two monitor outputs. You may just be better off buying one of these, since it is designed to support two monitors, but I would assume they may be quite expensive. Perhaps someone else here at Ask Me Help Desk can give us some suggestions, too.
