Changing medications from Lithium to Lamictal
    Hi There,

I've been on Lithium for 27 years.. now, I'd like to try Lamictal.

I welcome comments from those who have switched from Lithium to Lamictal..
What side effects did you experience?

How long have you been on Lamictal?

How do you feel with the medication?

Are you happy with the change you made?

    Well,for starters...

I have been on many meds over many years, lithium, and limictal both.

My last change brought me back to Depakote and celexa.

Limictal was not what the doctors had it hyped up to be(now remember, this is just one persons opinion,I have heard other opinions that differ from mine, but I'll leave their opinions for them to say)

I had serious cravings for sugar, like a diabetic going through a need for a fix,but it never let up,I gained 50 pounds in less than 3 months.

Starting up on the med. Was a challenge,a slow increase daily till its leveled,30 days if I remember right.

Coming down from it was like NOTHING I HAVE EVER BEEN THROUGH!! (Believe me,I am a recovering drug addict,I know what withdraws are, this was 20 times worse)
What a herion addict goes through is not even close to this drugs effects are in withdraws.

This is a very true comment, this is my experience as of 11/06-4/07 I WILL NEVER USE THAT MED AGAIN.

Take this with a grain of salt till you hear more,

    Ken

I see that this is two months out, but thought I would respond anyway.

I have a number of acquaintances (support group members) that swear by a combination of Lamictal and Lithium. They have lower doses of both then would be indicated for either individually, which means they have a lower instance of side effects from both.

This is also the path my doctor and I are looking to follow.

    Good luck,
    Dts
