I've been suffering from chondromalacia for a while now, surgery didn't help... actually, I developed a post-op DVT in the leg, and now have post thrombotic syndrome, which is even more painful than the knee pain. I actually had to resign from my job because of this, and I'm sick of the pain keeping me from sleeping, working, and just living my life in general. I'm waiting for my doctor to refer me to a pain management specialist, since surgery, cortisone injections, and 18 months of physical therapy didn't help (therapy actually made the knee feel worse somehow). Will the pain management doctor be able to help me, or should I not get my hopes up?

Hi reflex, to be experiencing this type of knee pain which is the result of the cushion that keeps our knees supple, deteriorating can be excruciating. Where you a runner at one time ? This is usually experienced by people active in sports. Usually nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain relievers, such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) are recommended.

Pain management doctors are relatively new on on the scene but I would say anything that gets you help is worth trying at this point, especially coupled with deep vein thombrosis.

Yeah I've been on prescription strength naproxen since the surgery. I have to use it sparingly because it ended up with an ulcer. It doesn't work very well anymore, and I'm afraid I don't have too many more options. Thanks for the response!
