    Switched Outlets
Can someone please tell me if it is possible/safe to have 3 outlets wired so that all 6 receptacles are controlled by 1 wall switch.

I want to install 6 hanging lamps that already have the plugs attached, and would rather not cut them off for a hardwire install.

Any suggestions/guide lines will be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

It's OK as long as 80% of the rating of the breaker is not exceeded. The 80% is required if the lamps are on for more than 3 hrs per day.

Amps = (total watts)/mains voltage. The mains is 120 V in the US.

Thanks for the quick response. But just to make sure of the wiring, Do I just use 14/2 (if applicable) from the new circuit breaker to the switch, and then from the switch to the first outlet, then 2nd, & 3rd (pigtailing where needed)? And also I would then just keep the fins attached to each outlet so that all receptacles would then be controlled by the wall switch. Is this correct?

    Thanks again.

Correct. The balck wire gets switched. You don't have to pigtail (White and black) because the outlets have two sets of screws.

IF the box is metal, then you do need to pigtail the ground. One connection to the box and one connection to the outlet or switch.

If plastic then a pigtail to the outlet ground screw and the switch ground screw is required.

You can purchase appropriate pigtails in a package. One with a screw and the other with a wirenut for use in both cases respectively.

    14-2 w/ground is rated for 15 Amps
12-2 with ground is rated for 20 Amps.

Sounds good, Recepticles are not to be dimmable, due to possibility of vacuum or other things that hate low voltage.

I would like to add a switched outlet (3way) to my living room. I read an earlier post that explained how to separate the top half and bottom half of a receptacle. Does it seem reasonable to tap into the 'always hot side' of this receptacle and add the switches to the bottom receptacle? If so,...
