Opinions on H1N1 vaccine
First let me say I am not looking for answers or any type of medical advice. I know how I feel and my choices.
I have some friends with a huge concern over getting there children the H1N1 shot. They are alarmed with the mercury in it and it not being so called "tested" yet. Its coming to our school systems here and some parents don't know if they should go ahead with it or not.
My question is how many parents out there are actually worried over this?
How many have or haven't gotten there children the vaccine?
Its just a question I keep getting here having a son and thought I would bring it to the site.

Both of my children have received the vaccine. I know several people who have died from this already... 1 adult and 4 teen/preteens. I'm not risking burying my children before they bury me.
That aside, my son is also high risk with asthma issues. So I'm not leaving his health to chance.
Haven't heard of the mercury in the vaccine though. Can you provide me with a source?

FDA says in Sept. 09, "The FDA announced today that it approved four Swine Flu (H1N1) vaccines manufactured by Sanofi Pasteur, Novartis, MedImmune and CSL Limited and expects that the vaccines will be available in approximately four weeks. Vaccines will be available both with and without thimerosal." I sure do not have the answer but many people believe there is a link between that preservative and autism. No proof has been found of such a link but the rate of autism is definitely increased since the 1930s when thimerosal was developed. The rate was once 4: 10,000 but is now estimated to be 15-20: 10,000. It could also be partially attributed to newer diagnosis techniques.

J_9 I don't have any exact source. One of my friends here said while they were at the doctors they had to sign something because of the mercury in it. Well someone else I know is concerned and she gave me the name of something else in it, I googled it and it seems to be the name they are using for the mercury. Thimerosal. Like I said I don't have any source other then local parents and concern.

Does make you sit back and think doesn't it? But I agree also with the newer diagnosis techniques. This is one concern of my friend.

Thimerosal is right like Ballenger said. It is a preservative that is used in many vaccinations. I personally don't believe in the link between Thimerosal and autism, it still out for debate in the medical community.

I try not to worry about what is linked to what. I mean it seems everything causes cancer. Not to mention everything else out there.

Taking a vaccine is a bit like buying life insurance or making a bet. There can be side effects with some, some are not as effective as the manufacturers hope and, if they work, you will never know it worked. I have not received a vaccine but my daughter and her children plan to be vaccinated.

As a medical professional, I personally recommend the H1N1 vaccine to anyone in the high risk category. This includes, among others, children; pregnant women; and people with chronic ailments of the respiratory system.

This week a pregnant women and a 5 year old died from swine flu, with no under lining health issues...
Last week, the newspapers and the health board here were not giving the vaccine to under 5's and pregnant women, now they are...
I have an 8 year old,and I'm being really cautious about getting her the vaccine... honestly I don't think enough feedback on the vaccine has been received, including short term effects.
In saying all that,my daughter who had cystic fibrosis,if she was alive I would not think twice in getting her vaccinated..
I'm still on the fence... there is not enough information available in ireland laid out in simple terms, what is available is full of medical jargon.

I also am on the fence. I personally am not getting it. I want my husband to he is a severe diabetic with all kinds of issues. My son, I am not sure. I go back and forth. Dam if I do, dam if I don't.

Ask your doctor if he can get you a H1N1 without thimerisol if that is the part that worries you.

I am not worried so much. It just made me think all my friends are asking me what I am doing like I have the answers. I am not sure.
This is really bad but here was my thought. "hmmm sunny if they are bringing it in the schools then so be it, I pay taxes for a reason and it will save me the copay at the docs"
Yes that's sad thinking but that's what I thought. I am not against him having it or ready to stand and wait two hours in line for it.

I don't think you will see public schools orchestrating the vaccination of its students. The local county health department may set up a clinic or something but schools will stay back from this role.

The primary schools in ireland will be giving the vaccination... there are also clinics being set up.
Another problem that has occurred,is a child and teenager died from Meningitis, early symptoms mistaken for swine flu... parents did not react in time... local doctors assumed the same.

They are bringing it to ours schools. I don't know how but right now they are in my friends district. That's why she asked me about it for my son. I was going to make an appointment at my sons doctor but he also said himself the school districts were taking care of it. How I am not sure, but it will be in the schools. If I find out more I can keep you posted on that.

What state or school district is doing this? When I was a Principal we used to give aspirin and other over the counter meds, before I retired we were barely allowed to hand a child a band aide. Our insurance said we were outside our authority and can't give meds or medical advice.

When in doubt, ask.
Thimerosal has not been proven to cause autism. No more than plasticizers in microwaved plastic dishes. I spent a LOT of time researching this.. I'm trained in chem and bio, and there just is no conclusive evidence.
That said, I know my state does restrict vaccines from containing mercury, and I'm glad for it.
I don't know anyone who had died from h1n1, but my cousin's son just had it and his "mild" case... threw a fever of 105.
k.
At 103 with the "regular" flu I was putting my three year old in the shower and making him sleep without clothes.
If I could get the h1n1 vaccine for my son, I would. Period.

I am in NY.
I can find out more. Maybe they are having a clinic come in and setting up. But I know its happening. When I talk to my friend again I will ask how her sons school did it. He is in the next town over, just same district.
