What is this hump/lump on back?
I think I have some kind of disorder with my spinal cord or something, I have this bone on my back on the top base of my spinal cord under my neck, its like a hump or something I don't know but it's really ugly and makes me feel real self conscious. What is it? :(

Is it part of your spinal column? Does it feel like a bony knob? If you are thin, it will be more prominent.

Is it a fatty hump like a baseball under your skin?

How on earth did you ever notice it, since it's in a place that a person normally can't see?

Correction to my post (sorry!) : it's not at the base of my spinal cord it's under my neck on my back.
I am not thin, I am overweight. It's like a bone under my skin. Here's a picture :

Could be scoliosis. Have you had a doctor look at it? If it's like a fat deposit it could be from having an excess of steroids or amino acids in your body, but you said it was like a bone, right...
How old are you exactly? Have you ever had any back injury? Or health problems related to growth?

    Hmmm...

Of course, you know the drill. Make an appointment and let your doctor look at it. Ignoring it won't tell you a thing, and, if it's something that needs to be dealt with, sooner is better than later.

I know I'm piggybacking but it seems an appropriate thread for discussion of all such bumps. I have a similar bump in exactly the same place the size of a large pea that appeared as what I originally thought was a very sore ingrown hair. Do you have any removal or other info? Feels like a lymph kernel but hasn't gone away.

It sounds like excess fat deposited on the top of your back; that is very common in overweight people. Genetics determines where excess fat is deposited on one's body.

I have a few ideas of what it could be but it could be anything so see a doctor if you think it's serious.
It could be a cysts that has formed on your back, they're not really dangerous and can be cut out by a surgeon or you can do what my grandmother told my dad when he had a cyst and wack it with a phone book (needless to say it didn't work).

It could also be a lymph node that has swolllen due to an illness, this is kind of a longshot though because even though you have lymph nodes throughout your body they're not commonly found or noticeable on your back.

It could also just be a fat deposit, that if you want removed can be cut out real quick considering it's not near or attached to anything that's vital to your life.

Good luck and I hope you figure out what it is!

It's a fat pad. I get that too if I gain weight. Loose weight and it will go away

Help- my 11 year old daughter has a lump in the same place - its hard and doesn't move. Slightly smaller than a golf ball. It almost seems like bone. She is very thin.

Its more then likely the curve of the spine. I have the same thing (I have seen the x-rays) and I have had its since birth. Its in the very same place.
Look at the Lateral image, where is says Cervical. Where the spine is curving towards the "l" in cervical is where the base of your neck is. The top of the spine is tilted a bit more foreword making the curve more prominent. It can became sore because the stress on the neck is in a different area, but if you rub and place heat and cold to it, the pain should improve. Sometimes the misplaces stress on your neck can cause headaches, using a good pillow (one that supports the neck) can help prevent this.
    I hope this helps!

I have the same thing but I'm not overweight, and I went to the doctors and they were useless... however I did get an answer to it! Its because of bad posture but I got mine to be better by improving my core strength :) so strengthen your abs and lower + upper back !

I have the same bony hump, and it makes my neck sore when I walk too much or especially carry anything (like my purse).

I also have a sore, weak back that makes it hard to bend over, or even walk upright if I have been sitting too long (and it locks up if I sit or lay on too hard a surface). I know my back problems improve when I get into a good routine of specifically exercising my lower back, but I've never seen my neck hump get any better.

Anyone have any thoughts on what exercises would improve a neck hump like that?

I have the same thing and was also wondering.. I'm 25 and I've suffered from fibromyalgia since I was 14.. So I thought it had something to do with that but it's a much different pain... I have no insurance and am a single mother so no money for doctors.. I've been researching for past year and looks to be a bulging disc or a cervical herniated disc. Although I am not a doctor, it could be one of those issues. Hope you find out! Good luck!!
