I am experiencing intermittent sudden sharp pains just below the left side of my rib cage. These pains come on usually while sitting, stretching or laying down helps. Nothing else seems to be going on except occasionally accompanied by gas. It is not a constant pain, usually one or two sharp pains that never last more than 2mins but they will come back later. I have been to a doctor who took chest X-rays (from my side not facing it), blood tests, and a urine test that all came back normal. She gave me a muscle relaxer and anti-inflammatory that did nothing but made me sleepy. I no longer have insurance so please help me as to what this could be. I am a hypochondriac so I am automatically thinking the worse (lymphoma or some other cancer). Please help put my mind at ease!

We can't and won't diagnose here, but didn't the doctor say ANYTHING about the most common reason, gas? Your stomach goes up on the left side under the ribs, and gas rises. If gas doesn't burp up, it collects in the highest part of the stomach, on the left side. Buy some Tums, chew one, drink some water, and report back. Relief should be instant although it may not last more than an hour. Then you need to try a slower but longer lasting OTC kind, and if that isn't enough, a prescription antacid, or an alternative diet.

I appreciate it. When I went to the doctor she was saying it could be an enlarges spleen (that's why she did the X-ray) but really didn't say much else about it since everything came back normal. Honestly the pain isn't horrible just enough to be worrisome - and it was defiantly worrisome after she mentioned it could be my spleen! I'll try some tums. Usually my gas pain is a constant pain or always followed by gas. This time it's random, sudden, and not always followed by gas. But it has crossed my mind it could be associated with heartburn. I'll try the tums

if you went to your doctor and she said everything is normal, then we can't judge your problem just on a comment. I would like to see your X-ray reports so that I can put my opinion. So your pain in upper abdomen seems like you are having a problem of gas or indigestion. May be you are having some unhygienic food due to which its getting complicated for your body to digest it or may be its due to some kind of over load pressure during gym or lifting heavy objects. Also pain will be constant till you have the gas problem.
