Is it Bad University?
Hi all, I'm studying in Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences but my specialty study is Hotels management and it takes 4 years here .
I think we must take some practical courses in food and beverage , reception ,cooking... but actually we are taking courses in accounting management ,and lodging management and food and beverage management and . Marketing and sales , operational research , purchasing management , and hotels industry , food preparing , food safety, human resource management and things like that... but all of this courses are theorical not practical!! And at the end of the 4th year there is six training months in 5 stars hotel by rotating on all divisions there... am waiting for the biginning of the 3rd year for me .
And I need some comments about that is this university know what is HOTELS MANAGEMENT... and I don't think so...
Please give me comments.
Thank you all

It does not sound like a very good uni to me . However, there are other bad Uni. Deakin for example. I'm processing against them at the moment, so I can't tell much at the moment. I will however give more detail soon.
Deakin University (Faculty of Science and Technology) in Burwood is a very bad university.
If other have bad experience from Deakin I would be glad if you could contact me.
Regards
/Mike

In a uni, you learn the theory, not merely practical. In my opinion, what you have written sounds okay to me. If only you had gone to mine! In my computer degree, they give you nothing but assignments, i.e. programming assignments! And you need to make sure they are in working order or else you fail the whole subject. Think of the precious time we wasted doing those meaningless assignments!
In the end, as uni grads, we hardly know any theory in what we learnt, but only the programming.
Eg, what they can offer for their computer networks is a pale shadow compared to CCNA. Likewise, what they can offer for their software engineering and database courses is a pale shadow compared to Oracle and MySQL.
I really hated that uni!

This thread has been posted since 4 years, now I am working for a five stars hotel and I've got two promotions (thanks god).
Sometimes you feel that you are not sure about your majority but believe me as bruceask said "In a uni, you learn the theory, not merely practical", for me being a self motivated and enhancing your knowledge by reading books and the internet and having faith in your ability and just a key hint for anyone.

Hi
I've just studies at Deakin and while I don't know what your experiences were, I found that they were slow to respond to reasonable requests for IT to work, and it seems students are charged every time we turn around (on top of the unit fees).
I've studied at other unis and they seem to be better at responding in a timely manner and didn't charge a fee everything you asked for something to be done!
Cheers

Hi,
I just finished a masters of teaching degree at Deakin and it was a horrendous course. Deakin is unorganised, patronising, sarcastic and rude. The students were subjected to the most puerile tutes imaginable e.g. 'take off your learner hats and put on your teaching hats, we're going to draw a picture of a student garden.' Lecturers also filmed us on top of making us draw these ridiculous, childish metaphors and posted them online because they were studying students in the masters of teaching degree, we were their guinea pigs.
Their marking is unfair because they leave out so much of their expectations in lectures and in the hard copy criteria, so you end up paying for their mistakes, which is non negotiable.
It was all so very unclear and so removed from reality, in the sense that it was impractical, I could hardly bare it! It was a total and utter wank.
