    It's basically keeping track of places, so 184/8:

    Does 8 go into 1: No
    Does 8 go into 18; Yes, 2 remainder

    so:
    ____2
    _8{184
    ___16
    ____24

    Note, that the (2) is over the 8 because it did not go into 1.
    18-16 is 2 and we bring down the 4.

    Now you do 24/8; turns out to be 12/4 or 6/2 or 3; yep 3*8 =24 - Just did it a longer way.

    Now

    ____23
    _8{184
    ___16
    ____24
    ____24
    _____0

    Basically 3*8 = 24 and 24-24=0

    Your looking for that 0 remainder or 0/8 in this case for a fractional answer. You can continue until something repeats.

    And check your work: 23 * 8 = 184
