I am not smarter than a 5th grader, at least in math.
Okay, you can all feel free to laugh when you read this, and I'm sure as soon as someone gives me a hint, I'll be smacking my head going "why didn't I see that?"

My daughter has math homework, and even though this should be very very easy, for some reason it's eluding me. I think I'm over thinking it.

So I just need a bit of help. Yes, it's homework, but to be fair, it's not my homework. You guys lead me, I lead my daughter, we're all happy. Deal? ;)

Here's the question, and don't laugh at me, math was never my strong suit.

Vijay has 1/20 of a dollar in his pocket. What coins might he have?

Ya, there's the question that's eluding me.

    Any help?

Attention! We cannot do your homework for you. You must first post your answers and then someone may come along to assist you if you are having trouble.

    LMAO!

OMG! I'm laughing so hard I think I peed my pants.

This thread is a moot point now. I figured it out. :)

I will hang my head in shame for asking a homework question. Especially such an easy one.

I guess I should show my work.

    100/20 = 5

Vijay (by the way, what sort of name is that?) has either a nickel or 5 pennies in his pocket. But, since I over think things, he has to have a nickel, because the Canadian penny was recently discontinued. We're phasing out the penny, it started at the beginning of February. No more pennies are being made, and banks are no longer distributing them. Most stores no longer accept them. So, he could still have pennies, but really, a nickel would be better. :)

There's a famous golfer named Vijay Singh, from Fiji. I've seen that name in other places too.

I've never seen it, and I have to admit, when I first saw the name my first thought was "Vajayjay", what the younger crowd uses as the word for vagina.

Maybe that's why I couldn't concentrate on the actual math problem. ;)

Alty, that was quite funny! We see a lot of parent stress over h/w in math. I overheard 2 of my Kinder parents talking today about how they had trouble with my math h/w. Vijay is common here in CA, mostly students of Indian descent.

I've never seen the name until today, and once I thought of Vajajay, I couldn't get it out, which is probably why I couldn't figure out the darn solution.

I should have changed the name to Tom. :)

Okay, first, I already got it. Had you read the rest of the posts, you'd have known that I got the answer (by myself) shortly after I posted the question. But, thanks for your answer.

I do have to add though, I didn't want the answer. I wanted to know how to get the answer. On this site we don't just post the answer, we expect the poster to figure it out for themselves. Since I am a long term member, and everyone else that's long term knows I'm not in 5th grade, not looking to cheat on my homework, giving me the equation would be realistic. But the answer? No. I didn't expect, nor should they give, the answer. That's against site rules.

But thank you. You are correct, it's a nickel, or 5 pennies. :)

In future, help by giving advice, not the answer. Okay?

    Welcome to the site.
