    I need to define a variable, write an equation and solve the problem. Adults' tickets cost $5 and students' ticket cost $2. If 295 tickets were sold and a total of $950 was collected, how many students' tickets were sold?

    Yes, and what did you try?

    I'll define them for you.

    Let x be the number of students' ticket.
    Let y be the number of adults' ticket.

    Can you complete it now? :)

    5x+2(295-x)=950
    Number of tickets sold cost 5x+590-2x=950
    Adults x $5 3x+590=950
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -590 -590
    Kids 295-x $2 ----------------------
    3x=360
    295 tickets sold in total $950 total --- ---
    3 3
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I x=120=number of adult tickets sold I
    I 295-x=175=number of kids tickets sold I
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
