Why is your boyfriend in jail? How long is he going to be in jail? Is this his first offense? Or is this a pattern of behavior for him? Did you know him before he went to jail? Why do you want to marry him? Does he want to marry you? What is your gain in getting married to him? What would be his gain in marrying you?
Yes, marrying someone in jail or prison is possible. You and your boyfriend need to follow the rules set by that county or city jail. So that is where you start - at the jail. Or if you have a minister, ask that person, as ministers can (and do) visit jails and perhaps that person would know the protocol. You would need a marriage license for sure. Also, check with the clergy who visit the jail or are assigned to the jail.

Ms. Typical,
I have to ask this because I'm concerned for you. What was your boy friend convicted of and how long is he sentenced?
Finding him in your state's prison system should be fairly easy. Contact the court system he was convicted under and ask for the disposition of the case and into whose custody he was remanded into. Then contact the remanding agency and see where he was put.
I want you to think long and hard before you take the next step. Depending on when he was sentenced, determine if he has had ample time to contact you by snail mail. If he has, then he has in fact made a decision for you. If he wanted you around, he would have contacted you and asked you.
There are several immediate reasons for you not to marry while he is imprisoned the first of which is not knowing what you are going to get back from the inside of that prison. Any prison is violent regardless of what the warden's think. The degree of violence reflects the make up of inmates. Any type of violent offender is going to be incarcerated with like felons just like himself. Survival is tough!
Please take your time, if your purpose is to support him, forget it, he's got to do that himself. He did the crime now he gets to do the time.
If it is a multi year sentence, then your hope for a normal married life is at least that far off into the future, assuming he gets into an early release program for good behavior.
Be smart, wait and see what his first step is!

Ms Typical,
If he is still incarcerated he is not on parole. His parole hearing is pending or still off in the future. There is no guarantee that he will be paroled. And with parole may come a mandatory amount of time in a half way house depending on how long he has been in jail.
You sound so unconcerned for your basic safety. If this is something you really want to do then, I'd suggest that you talk to your Priest, Pastor or Rabbi if you have one just to get some additional insights.
As to the mechanics of marriage, I would think that the person your intended should see is the prison Chaplin. In fact it would be a very good idea that both of you see the Chaplin. With the Chaplin's approval, then the next step is to get the warden's permission.
I'm really curious, how did you and your fellow meet? How long have you known him?

You should have a marriage with your best friend that loves and respects you... not just for longer conjugal visits. Could you wait until he's released?
My sister has been with her boyfriend for 6 years and he only proposed when he got arrested during a 6 month sentence... asking her over the phone. It just sounded like a desperate man. He could have given her a loving proposal rather than a jailhouse plee. I just don't want to think that's all he's asking you for. Either way, you'll have to call the jail and ask them what should be done. It depends on where he's locked up.
Good Luck

Hey esa don't listen to all these people if you want to marry your vato then do it. Go to the court house and get a marriage affidavit for your man send it to him have him fill it send it back to you then go back to the court house give it to them they will give you a marriage license you fill it out send it to him so he can sign it then he sends it back to you and you take it to the court house and they put it in the computer and you're married. To legally change your last name you have to go to the dmv with all your marriage papers and an old photo id. Then go to the social security office with all your papers and then wait for your new social security card. I did it and I'm soooo happily married and my husband is in prison for 6 years!

Why not try to find someone on the outside, I assume if he has a year left he must be a real winner, huh. Of course he talks to you a lot, probably not too many women around him in prison. Scary at best.
