Pronouncing words that begin with str
I have noticed lately that people are pronouncing words that begin with s t r differently than I ever have. For instance, instead of saying "street" they're saying "shtreet" or instead of staying "strive" they're saying "shtrive". Is this a new way of pronouncing these words that I am not aware of? What do you think is proper?

This is one of my pet peeves... many people from Texas (and maybe Oklahoma) *mispronounce* the word street, for example, and other words that begin S T. They add the sh sound. *shivers*
Don't copy those who do this; you will sound uneducated.

Heehee, You have to be careful about what pronunciation and usage you get off television!
The worst is verb tenses... they are all screwed up. Uneducated people will add an extra past tense when it is not needed... like saying "I had went" for I went... Eeeeeek! I have picked up some bad habits because I watch TV all day. :(
I watch quite a bit of English(England)mystery television... no bad English there!

First time I noticed the STR words being mispronounced, was on our local news station, ABC CHANNEL 7. Cheryl Burton is the culprit. Thought I saw Ron Magers twitch a bit. Then, I started hearing it a lot! AAARRGH! As bad as when the word "jewelry" becomes "jewlery"(jooluhree) or relator instead of realtor! Connie DP
