Questions regarding atheists and violence against them
In our country recently an atheist who used sarcasm in his website against islam has been brutally murdered. Some people are saying that it is justified and this is what should be done to him as they are supporting this murder. . Giving the following ref:
Quran (5:33) - "The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement"
Is quran promoting violence by saying this? If not what should be my reference from quran if I want to bring their thought to right path of islam?
My question is: is quran saying that we should kill atheists who uses bad words against islam and is this justified by this verse? Is there no place for even humanity in islam.
Please brothers and sisters your answers important as these will change thoughts of lot of people.

Hi sumaiya14, I would ask this again under the category Islam. I am not a Muslim and would not presume to comment on the Quran, but I do find it very sad that someone would be put to death or even punished or harmed for his religious views.

I'm not Muslim, but it seems to me that using sarcasm on a website against islam does not rise to the level of "waging war against Allah or His messenger." Waging war means taking action to try to eradicate Islam. Non-violent actions such as being sarcastic or making fun of something is not the same as "waging war" against it. Believers should have the tolerance to allow people to express their views in a non-threatening way, even if they are sarcastic or rude, because expressing such views will not bring harm to a great religion.

The Muslims who committed this horrific crime are fearful that their God is too small, that He cannot prevail against even mere words. It should be God's (not man's) final judgment.
Muhammad was as kind as he was polite. He always treated people with kindness and tenderness and never showed harshness even to his enemies. The people who abused him, threw thorny bushes and stones and dirt on him and were thirsty for his blood, received nothing but kindness from him. He showed kindness to all, irrespective of whether they were friends or foes. God mentions this quality of Muhammad's in the Qur'an,
"O Messenger, it is a great Mercy of God that you are very gentle and lenient towards them; for, had you been harsh and hardhearted, they would all have broken away from you." [Qur'an 3:159]
n his boyhood, he never fought or quarrelled with anyone like other boys of his own age, but always showed kindness and friendship, to the aged as well as to the young. When he reached maturity, he was well-known for his kindness and sympathy to the poor orphans and widows. After he became the Prophet, his kindness to people knew no bounds. Anas said, "I served God's Messenger for ten years and he never said to me, 'shame' or 'why did you do such a thin"?' or 'why did you not do such and such a thing?' " In Medinah, when he was the head of the state and had the power to take revenge on his enemies, hetreated all captives and prisoners-of-war, including his hard-core enemies, very kindly. http://www.pbuh.us/prophetMuhammad.php?f=Ch_Kindness
