Polygyny is permissible in Islam, but this means that the husband has obligations to fulfill regarding his wives as in they should be treated kindly, financially and emotionally well and not neglected in anyway.
Most muslims do not practice polygyny because it takes hard work to look after two or more wives, and as we believe we are answerable to the Almighty regarding all of our actions good and bad,we will also be judged as to how we treat our spouses too.

Polygyny is practiced in many communities even now,but it is not as common as people think.
