    Ms. Garlik has 250 shares of ibm stock.
    She wants to double the number of shares she owns. About how many shares of stock should ms. garlik buy?
    This is a multiple choice problem with the answers being
    a. 500 shares
    b. 350 shares
    c. 300 shares
    d. 250 shares
    I selected d. 250 shares but my teacher said that was wrong. He said the correct answer is a. 500 shares. I said she already has 250 so she would only need to buy 250 to double. Which is the correct answer and why?

    500 is the correct answer, I will explain: Take the question another way, eg: She want's to buy double the shares she own's, she already own's 250 so if she wanted double that, the answer would be 500. I think this is a bit of a trick question, designed to be a bit harder than usual to test your capabilitie's, don't worry, keep studying and you will get there in the end.
