Are There Any Sites Where a Non-Profit Organization Can Have a .com or .org Free?
Hi, All!
The title is my question. I run the website for a concert band in which I play. Board members are after me to find a site where a non-profit group can have free hosting for a website with a .com or .org address.
Any ideas, please?
I've checked some of the websites out. But, hosting space isn't even as good as the free website that I started a few years ago. Just because a website is labeled as .com or .org, doesn't mean that the website gets great exposure when people do searches for things.
I can see where having a .com or .org might look more professional for an address, but we already get excellent exposure because of what I've put "out there".
Thanks!

Try multiply.com, but I'm not sure if you'll like that... You know, limitations and stuff...
If you're good at flash, I suggest you make your own :)

Hi again, Sylvanta Sybil!
Is that a site where a group or organization can have a website with a lot of pages. And, is it free and can the group or organization have a .com or .org address on it?
Thanks!

Yes it is :) If you make yours in it it'll look like clough.multiply.com, if that's okay with you. It looks like a blog/social networking site, you can post videos, pictures, and people can post comments, and yes it's pretty organized, at the homepage you have the videos, music, pictures, all lined up. From where I am, a lot of small businesses use the site to promote their business, like in magazines, newspapers, etc.

The problem is, that the Board that I'm working with, is looking for a web hosting site where we don't have the name of the site hosting it in the domain name.
I do appreciate your pointing it out to me though. And, I might use it for some of things that I do for my own businesses.
I will "run" a site such as that, by the Board too!
Thanks!

And just why must a site have flash? I wonder if you realize there's plenty of us out there that hate flash stuff. It seems to be one of those things that designers like to play with, but isn't always terrible useful and sometimes annoying.

Hehe I know, especially if you're missing a plugin...
But it's fun for interactions and stuff.
Most people with flash sites have an option for an HTML one if you don't like the flash.
Good luck, Clough!! :)

Actually, I've been to sites that won't even let me in if I don't have flash. I don't mind not being able to see certain stuff, but I hate when they won't even let me in. (Just please don't ever do that. :-))

Right now, I'm having to use an older computer with just a dial-up connection. When the flash tries to come on, it messes up my browsing capabilities. I'm sure that I would be okay with a newer computer and a faster connection. That's what I did have, but that computer won't even start up right now!
Thanks!

Yes, I've been hiding out on your web site and can see everything you do. :p
I even know that you were up very late last night. At least until 3:18.

. Org is for non profit things. Schools I think get free addresses
Godaddy.com has names for 10 bucks a year which is the cheapest I've seen.
Then just have it linked to the free site with there name in it.
People won't really notice. And when they type in "yourgroupsname.org"
It WILL go to your page. If you are a non profit? I would think you can find 1 donation for 10 bucks? Or 10 for 1 dollar.
Either or.
I'm not sure anything is 100% free with out some sort of advertising or catch by the person/company who is giving it to you for free.

For real... be weary of monitors with built in we cams. Don't leave your computer on if your are not using it. A bad habit a lot of people do. That's when most harm is done to computers when its on unattended AND plugged into the internet overnight over morning etc..

I'm assuming you want both a free domain name and free webhosting, you buy each one separately. The easiest solution is Google for a free web-hosting service and use bit.url, it won't be anything .com but it'll still be small enough. This is what I used to do with my old band websites, if you're not going to be hosting a lot of content, this will work.
If you do decide to spend some money, I highly recommend you do not decide on GoDaddy, it's cheap for a reason. Unless you want incredibly slow and unreliable service and to be blasted with ads for the rest of your life, stay away from them.

Okay, thanks guys!
The consensus would seem to be that a person or organization can't really have a .com or .org website without paying for it.
Correct?
Thanks!
