Dialing into a computer in USA while one is abroad
... can one use their laptop to access the internet while abroad(kenya-Africa in this matter)... Are there broadband or wireless options that I can set up with my local provider(I have verizon fios for my wireless needs at the moment) before leaving the country.. are there special cards and or gadgets needed to facilitate this?. and on the same token can I dial into my running programs in the US while I am over 8000 miles away and across the vast water bodies?. I am not too savvy when it comes to computers,I suppose you can discern that, but outside of that some help on the above scenario will help a great deal as I ready myself to travel.

    Thank you in advance!

If you are using Verizon Broadband device such as a PCMCIA Card or USB adapter that attaches to your laptop, they do offer a Global Data Service, however, this is a separate service and would require that you use a different card. Outside of the US, data transmits over a different cellular technology. I would check with them regarding that. I know they have it, I have configed it for my customers, but, the hardware and configuration changes like the weather.

As long as you can get on the Internet you can log into a home PC using Logmein.com or gotomypc.com or the like.

Most foreign countries will have some hotspots or Internet cafes.
