    Tiling using existing mud bed
    I am remodeling a house and the floors on the mail level are ceramic tile and hardwood floors. I want to change one of the rooms from ceramic tile and put hardwood floors in the room. I am refinishing the hardwood floors and making them darker so the new and old floors will match.

    When we pulled the air vents out of the floor, we found the "mud bed" was about 8 inches thick! My hardwood guy says to dig all the way down to the subfloor and he will rebuild the floor where he needs it to be.

    Question - Do you think I should take out the rest of the "mud bed" that is 8 inches thick to replace with stone tile?

    Another problem, when I pulled up the tile and the thinset, the old mud bed is extremely bumpy. Any thoughts?

    How old is the home or installation and how cracked is that mud bed?

    Home was built in 2000. The mud bed is not cracked at all. Everyone can't believe that it is so thick.

    Another problem is where we went all the way down to the subfloor (in the room that was tiled and now going to be hardwood), the edge is extremely rough. Like an 8" cliff.

    Put in 2x6 sleepers with 2 layers of 1/2'' plywood. Set 2x6 at a height that is less the thickness of the plywood and finished floor.

    Can't imagine an 8"bed. Was this a sunken room? How could the floor support the weight?
