How do I remove my Hampton Bay ceiling fan?

Hi I have a Hampton bay remote ceiling fan. The remote broke but I can't get the decorative cover off the canopy to get to the remote it only twists a little bit

Our Hampton Bay ceiling fan's canopy has no screws with which it was attached. There is a plastic ring. We need to remove the canopy to get to replace the fan. How do we remove that canopy. It does not want to budge. I have tried turning it with both hands as forceful as our grip allows. I've tried...
