Can one parent find out if the other has life insurance on their child?
I am worried that an abusive parent, who shares custody, may someday have or get a life insurance policy on their child.
Can the other parent find out if this exists? I am not the non abusive parent, I'm their close relative, but have this fear and don't want to bring it up to the parent unless I have a way to find out right then.

CPS is aware of the problem, but they don't/can't do everything. My relative knows and wants me to help w/info when I have it. I am being vague and rambling I know. Even w/my family knowing I check info carefully, I don't feel it's my info, or fair to the child if I share. I hope that makes sense. I know good parents get life insurance, but this is more complicated.

What is your "fear"? That the person would murder his child for insurance? Not likely to collect. A person could very easily get life insurance for their child. And, the other person would not know. And yes, you are snooping, even if you consider it helping the other person. You may even get involved legally so tread carefully.

As long as the person is paying the premiums for the life insurance policy, there's nothing illegal about getting a life insurance policy on a child. That parent also doesn't have to disclose that they got a policy to anyone. So no, there's no way for you to find out unless you ask this person and they tell you. Any snooping beyond that could land you in trouble. You're treading somewhere you shouldn't be.

If it's a fear that this person will kill the child for the life insurance money, rest assured that insurance companies have many loop holes before they pay out. If the death is under suspicious circumstances, the money won't be available until the case is cleared.

It really does sound like you're sticking your nose somewhere it doesn't belong.

ANYONE is entitled to take out a life insurance policy on anyone else... as long as they pay the premiums. I could take out a life insurance policy on you if I had the information needed.

Its not wrong.. or illegal... in fact its quite smart.

I was going to point that out, but decided to stick with the OP's question about the child.

Good info though. It's true, I could take out life insurance on my neighbor as long as I had the info. As long as I'm paying the premiums, and the cause of death isn't suspicious, I could collect. It's insurance. It's not applying for a visa, or a marriage license, or a passport. I

If they are the parent, and they have joint or shared custody, they may legally buy life insurance on the child. ** and should, now is when it is inexpensive and the child should have a policy. I have one for my son.

No, there is no way another person can find out.

Actually no, one of the legal requirements for taking insurance out on someone else, is to have an insurable interest. You can not take it out on your neighbor. ( well to be exact you could not collect) and if they did proper underwriting, you could not buy it. There has to be some relationship that allows the one person to have an reason to purchase it. It can be family, or it can be business.

True. But I also agree with the previous posters that in general you can not find out whether a parent has a life insurance policy on his/her child - except perhaps by asking that parent.

Focus on the abuse not on spinning your wheels looking for a private LEGAL business matter that's impossible to find. Its very telling CPS can do nothing. What would be the nature of the abuse?
