Green card for traveling out the US
My mom came to the united states in 1981, she wants to visit her homeland, she has a green card and it does not have an expiration date and she was given the card in the year of 1981. Some people say that she has to renew her green card but I read an article that states if someone was given a card between the year 1971 to 1988 you don't not need to renew a green card, my question is that true? I know she has to do a form I 131 for traveling documents but does she need to renew her green card if she was given a non expired card from the year 1981?

She must renew her permanent resident card. She will need a current passport from her home country as well. Please be sure it is still valid. File immediately as there are she will need to be scheduled for biometrics, etc.

She does not need to file the I-131. That is for a re-entry permit, useful if she is planning on staying outside the US for more than 6 months.

I trust this is responsive to your inquiry.
