    There are two ways of self-petitioning

    1. EB2 National interest wavier
    2. EB1a exceptional ability

    I applied just after my phd in eb2-niw using a self help packet (greencardforphd.com), although I believe you can do the same while being a student if you have a good case (publications, and references showing national interest). The same packet I used could help you.
