Typically either device's manual will tell you the various ways. Best quality is using an HDMI cable.

In order of best quality first, your choices are: HDMI (or mini hdmi), Component (three colors and two audio on one cable), S-Video (requires separate audio cables for sound), and Composite (the old style from VCR days, one yellow video and red and white audio). As long as both devices have the same style inputs and outputs, you should use the highest quality hookup you can. Once the DVD Player is on, you need to go through the TV's Sources to find the one the DVD is hooked to. Newer TV's might have sources like HDMI1 HDMI2 composite1 composite2 etc. with corresponding jacks on the TV so you need to find the right source into the TV too.
