Surround sound only works for movies
Hi! I just got a sony surround sound system and the guy only hooked it up for movies. How do I make it work for regular cable and Playstation?

You need to give us a lot more information.

For example, exactly what did the tech. connect to what.

Normally, the sound is handled by a sound processor and is independent of the video signal. Please describe the units you have along with model numbers and manufacturer's names.

It makes no sense to just bring Dolbly Digital or other formats over to the AV without bringing it across for everything.

One other question, are you sure the TV stations are broadcasting in digital sound?

Hi! Thanks for the assist. The guy connected the red, white, and yellow wires from the TV to the SS receiver. They are placed in audio out (white and red) and the yellow is placed at the side of TV in whole that simply says video. All are matched as colours. The speakers are of course plugged into the sub.

My TV is a 52" Toshiba Regza and the model # is 52RV530U. The SS is a Sony and the model # is ESSONDAVIS10.
The cable box is from ROGERS and is an EXPLORER 1840 (digital Receiver)

I hope this helps some and again thank-you for the assist.

I am not familiar with those specific units... however, as a general rule you need the following:
    1) every source unit (like your Rogers unit or the playstation) should be connected to separate inputs on the back of the surroundsound unit. If you look on the back of your surround sound, you should see areas entitled "video 1 and audio 1" etc. Both the video and audio cables need to be connected between each . You should use HDMI cables if there are HDMI connectors for them. If you use the white and red cables (like you currently have on your TV) then you'll find you also need to have an optical cable or you'll lose your subwoofer signal.

    2) the surround sound needs to be connected to the TV and to the speakers. THis is done already, although you should probably replace the cables they gave you connecting to the TV. Do you intend to use the speakers on the TV too, or just the sony speakers? HDMI gives you the best quality and will give you both audio and video. Composite video cables are video only.

If this does not make sense, please post back what labels you see (i.e. audio 1 etc) on the back of your surround sound, and someone can help a bit more.

    Mae,

I'm getting no help from Sony's web site. Based on the model number you've given us, it shakes out to a speaker system ("SS") that is sold in Canada. However that is all I can find.

Do you happen to have the manual and is there a publication ID number?
