Set up Dish 2 channel box to record on one channel?
    Hi

I think that I understand this but I want to ask if my I have gotten is right.

I am getting a dual channel Dish box.
I currently have my single channel Dish box hooked up to a Sony DMR EZ27 DVD recorder.

I have the Main (the shielded single cable) video output going from the Dish box directly to the TV, and the RCA type adapters (3 wires L audio, R audio and video cable) going into the recorder and then from there to the video connections on the TV.

The audio cables run from the back of my TV (Audio Out) to my amplifier.

When I switch back and forth from TV to Video mode I can switch from what is playing on TV to what the DVD player is playing at the same time.

What I want to do is replace my single channel Dish box with a 2 channel one.

Am I right that if I simply run the RCA type cables from the channel 2 connections on the new Dish box to the recorder, I will be able to switch to Video mode and start recording channel 2, then switch back to TV mode and watch another program on channel 1 while the first is recorded?

This sound simple to me is there more to it then I think?

    Mike,

You are leaving a ton of information out of this posting.

For example, usually a dual tuner box is reserved for High Def, now and DVR recording.

So is that what you have or do you actually have just a dual "IN" tuner and no recording options?

If you do, then, you would want the out of the tunner to the in of your recorder, the audio, out of the recorder to your audio amplifier and the video out of the recorder to your TV. If you are using an audio amp for surround sound, Dolby or DTS then you do not need audio from the TV.

You also left out is you are using an AVR (Audio, Visual , Recorder) as an amp. If you are, then all output of the Dish tuner, goes to the AVR and then to Recorder and TV.

If you can append some pictures of the back of your equipment to this posting, I can tell you how to set it up correctly!

    Hi

What I am getting is a simple 2 channel Dish box no HD no built in recorder.
It is designed to run 2 TVs with 2 remote controls one infrared and the other via a radio signal. I will get a new TV some time in the near future but not right now, I just switched from VHS Tape to a DVD recorder.

The Dish box has on the back...

2 satellite tuner inputs? Are these where the connecton from the Dish go in?
    UHF Pro remote antenna input
    1 telephone jack
    3-prong power cord

    TV1 Connections...
    1 TV antenna/cable input
    1 set RCA-type audio/video outputs
    1 S-video output
1 RF modulated output (channel 3/4). This is the one that ruuns directly to the TV bypassing the Recorder and is active when the TV is set to TV mode...

    TV2 Connections…
1 set RCA-type audio/video outputs. These are the ones that will go to the DVD recorder. They then output to the TV Video mode inputs.
1 agile modulated output (channels 21-69; 73-125); mono audio

I’m pretty sure that there is no reason that I can’t record one channel with the DVD recorder while I’m watching TV on another channel in TV mode? It will play both at once, and I can switch back and forth by clicking the TV/Video button.

The audio runs from the TV to the Amplifier so that it outputs which ever channel is active. So it switches with the TV/Video button too.

    I hope this is clearer.

I just found out that the Dish Box isn’t going to get here until next Friday (it was suppoded to come yesterday), so I have a week to figure this out.

I guess what I need to know is do I have to input to both or the tuners from the dish cable using some kind of splitter or device? If I need something to do this I want to have it ready when the box shows up.

    Thanks for the help

    Mike,

I did not want you to think, I'm ignoring you. Please give me another day or so.

My Granddaughter is turning 15 and I have to clean the place for the party this evening.

    Mike,

My Granddaughter is letting me take a break, so here goes.

    The Dish:

2 satellite tuner inputs? You should get a DNB (Dual Noise Block) attached to your outside Dish. Those two RG6 coaxes will connect to each of the tuner inputs.

“UHF Pro remote antenna input” Your Dish Remote Controller. It should allow you to switch between tuners. Ask the Tech to show you how it works.

1 telephone jack – This connects the Dish Network services to your phone line. It passes information back and forth to the Dish Center for On Demand, Per Per View.

3-prong power cord – Power from the wall.

You are missing the connection from the Dish controller to the DVD or TV. So make sure the tech installs the correct equipment. Check the controller's model on the web to make sure that it is Two Inputs and one Out. Otherwise you are dead. If you only have one tuner out, you cannot record and watch different programs at the same time. You will be limited to the single output of the Dish controller.

DVD – Output from the Satellite Dish to the Input of the DVD.
TV1 – Out of DVD to Input of TV1 – < Red / White audio> S-video to DVD S-video to S-video TV1. (RF “Out” not used> an output line cannot be used for input signals)

TV2 - Composite Port (Yellow – video, Red-White – Audio) from DVD to Composite ports on TV2.

    Mike,

Since the box and misc equipment is not in house may I suggest a much better way of doing this.

Change your order at Disk to get a Dual Input, DVR (Digital Video Recorder). If is anything similar to my Direct TV controller, you will be able to record on both tuners at the same time and watch a Playback (only) from the controller.

Then connect the Output of the DVR to the IN of the your DVR and the OUT of your DVR to the IN of the TV.

That way, you can record two different channels, watach a playback from the Dish DVR or A DVD from your DVR. If you really want to save a show from the DVR, you can Playback from the Dish Controller to your DVR. When finished with recording the programj, erase the program from the Dish DVR and label the new DVD.

Most DVRs are prevented from recording in either 1080I or 1080P to prevent piroting of DVDs so you will only be able to get 780P or 480P.

    Hi

    Thanks for the help.

The box does have two inputs, two outputs and comes with two remote control units; the thing that I really wasn't clear about was how or why it input the signal to the two inputs.

All the channels come through the same connection normally so I didn't get why it needed two inputs instead of just separating the channels in the box somehow.

The way that I have it connected right now from my old one channel box, runs the TV and DVD Recorder through separate connections, i.e. both can run at the same time doing different things (the recorder can be playing a CD or DVD while the TV is receiving a TV signal, or recording from the same channel that I'm watching on the TV) switching the TV from TV to Video mode selects which signal the TV displays. They just lack the second channel input for the DVD Recorder that I should get from the new box.

As for the newer recorder box from Dish, and I'm just going by what the Dish people told me is that I need an HD TV on one of the connections to use it.

I'll let you know how it worked out after the installation.

    Hi again

I did pretty much what you suggested.

I got a dual input tuner with the recorder built in (contrary to what the guy on the phone told my I didn't need to have an HD TV to use it).

Then I ran channel 2 through my DVD Recorder, so I can make a hard copy if I need to even after the fact by recording the recording.

I can switch back and forth with the TV / Video switch as I planned and every thing works great.

    Thanks again for the help...
