Is there a way to connect a DVD/VCR combo unit that does not have a built-in tuner to a TV that has cable but doesn't have a cable box so that it can record TV programs?

I recently had to add a cable box to my TV set up. I had one three years ago and I was able to use my VCR/DVD combo along with a A/B switch and program a recording on one station, and watch a different station while it was recording (w/o the A/B switch I was not able to) Then I got rid of the cable...

I do not have cable or any other pay TV. I have a regular old tube TV in a workout room. I want to buy a DVD/VCR combo not expensive but have been told I have to have a built in tuner. If I am not concerned at this point about the 2009 changeover and just want to rig this and be able to record...
