    Garage Door Opener Quit Working?
I thought I was old enough to have seen it all, wrong!!

The wife and I got home last night, pulled into the driveway, pushed the remote to open the garage door and nothing happened!

Multiple attempts continued to fail. I replaced the batteries in the remote, green light lights up with each push of the button, but the door won't open.

We got lucky in the fact that I was able to pop open one of the locked storm doors and get inside. Grabbed the other remote, and it won't work either? Replaced those batteries, and still, not working.

It will open with the wall mounted button inside the garage, but neither remote will open or close it now.

It is a Challenger Garage Door Opener, not sure how old, came with the home when we bought it 5 years ago.

What could cause this and can anyone tell me what to check or how to fix?

Thanks in advance for any help!

My first thought is that the radio receiver inside the opener unit itself may have died. The wall button does not go through this path, so is immune to receiver failure.

You might try unplugging the opener to see if the receiver just needs to be reset (works for computers :p ).

If that doesn't help, you are probably looking at a new opener, as repair is probably not cost-effective.

My second thought is that if the opener uses "rolling codes" that something could've got your receiver out of sync with your transmitters. Open the transmitter and see if there is a series of small switches in there. If so, you DO NOT have a rolling code system.

If you do have a rolling code system, there should be a "program" or similar button on the opener unit itself. Generally, you would press that and then press the button on your transmitter to "train" it for the transmitter. Since the details of training vary between manufacturers, it would be best to find the owner's manual if you can.

    I hope this helps,

Nope, we bought ours in July. Now the remotes don't work and the garage door repair man says it's because the 315 mgb has too many people using it and ours can't get the signal?

I don't believe that it's because of overcrowding in the 315 MHz band. That sounds like baloney.

I'll vote for WallyHelps idea that the radio receiver has been damaged -- either that or the connection between the radio receiver and the relays that actually open the door has a bad transistor.
