New Years in different time zones
The Eastern standard time zone is just one small sliver of time in the world.

Maybe I don't get out enough, but I've seldom left my time zone, and I'm wondering what other people do at midnight on Newyears day. Such as the people of central, mountain, and pacific. Or even atlantic?

Seems the ball dropping at times square is the big thing, but then, you'd expect that over here in the east. What do you do on the west coast. I was thinking tonight as 2009 officially started for us, you Californians still have three hours to go!

And while I'm up asking questions, where does "west" officially meet "east"? It's always said we are "in the west", and people of the east are always carrying on about "western culture"... where is the dividing line? Somewhere in the pacific?

    Hi, andrewc24301

I usually play my recording of the Robert Shaw Male Chorus singing "Auld Lang Syne".

    It's awesome!

    Thanks!

The term "the west" usually means North and South America, western Europe, and (often) Australia & New Zealand. Depending on the context it may also mean parts of eastern Europe and/or Russia. In other words, places dominated by cultures that emanated from Europe. "East" typically means Asia - whether that includes all of Asia (including places like Turkey, most of Russia, the middle east, Iran, Pakistan, India etc) depends on the context. So what about Africa? It's neither east nor west.

Actually, I wikipedia'd time zones, and it had a handy little map with a big black line that was in the pacific that officially separated "east from west"
