How Many Legs Are In The Bus?
I am having trouble figuring out this word problem.
There are 7 girls waiting for a bus. Each girl is carrying 7 bags and inside each bag there are 7 cats. Every cat has 7 kittens and all cats have 4 legs each. How many legs are in the bus?
- THERE IS A BUS WITH 7 GIRLS
- EACH GIRL CARRIES 7 BAGS
- INSIDE EACH BAG THERE ARE 7 CATS
- EVERY CAT HAS 7 KITTENS
- ALL CATS HAVE 4 LEGS EACH
QUESTION: HOW MANY LEGS ARE IN THE BUS?

I'm a very visual learner so what I would do in this question is draw a representation and then count all of the legs. Another way of doing it: Since the girls have two legs and there are 7 of them you would multiply 2x7 which would give you 14 legs in total for the girls... now do the same for the cats... then the kittens... and add all of the legs up. Keep in mind how many legs one cat has though... it's not two like humans. Good luck and let me know what you come up with!

Could be a trick question. The girls and their cats are WAITING for the bus - they aren't on it yet. So, no legs are on the bus. Maybe two - for the bus driver. Depends on if this is a logic question or a math question. :)

Great catch jillianleab... technically the only set of legs on the bus is the bus driver...

I'm going with Jillean on this one... I can't see it being anything but a trick question... it doesn't say whether you need to take the driver into consideration or anyone else for that matter!
What about the conductor... or that little old lady with the dog that's ALWAYS on the bus! Lol! Do you count there legs!
(BTW, if the question was "How many legs ar on the bus" the answer is definitely none... buses don't have legs!)

Letmetellu disagrees: Explain to me just how you know that the driver is the only person on the bus? Unless you happen to be the bus driver?
Hence the word... TECHNICALLY! I don't see your input anywhere...

Is this a homework or assignment question? If it is you should learn the answer not cheat by going on the net and asking people. You don't know if their wrong and if your having trouble with this question ask the teacher!! There's no problem in asking!

7 (girls) x 7 (bags)= 49 bags
49 (bags) x 7 (large cats) = 343
343 (large cats) x 7 (kittens) =2401
343 (large cats) +2401 (kittens) = 2744 (cats & kittens)
2744 (cats & kittens) x 4 (legs/per cat) = 10976 (legs)
7 (girls) x 2 (legs)= 14
10976 (cat legs) + 14 (girl legs) = 10,990 legs on the bus

14 - for the little girls, the cats are in the bag so therefore not on the bus

I have had this question before. I would go with 2 because if you read it carefully it will state the there are 7 girls waiting for the bus. That would mean that they are waiting for the bus to show up. So the only legs in the bus would have to be the driver. Best of luck.

I got an e-mail with the same question, in order to open an excel file you need the correct answer. The girls and the bags and the cats etc. are all on the bus and have 10,990 legs just like angela25 has calculated! Bravo Angela25!!

QUESTION: HOW MANY LEGS ARE IN THE BUS?
That's because it is a math problem not a word problem
