York heat pump outdoor cutoff thermostat wiring
    Hello,
I have an older York heat pump model # E1RC030S06A serial # EEEM176773 that I would like to wire a White-Rodgers # 2B61-186 outdoor temp cutoff themostat into. Can this be directly wired into the outside unit or does it have to be mounted outside and wired into the air handler/heat strips? The wiring diagram on the outside unit is faded and unreadable and I can't find one online.

I am looking to save money by doing it myself unless professiional installation is recommended. Thanks!

Usually they can be wired directly into the outside unit DEPENDING upon what control wire are available in the outside unit.

All this control does is to hold off the auxilery heaters(resistance heaters) during mild weather so as to force the heat pump itself to provide all the heat for the structure.

I recommend this be installed by a professional because if hooked up incorrectly damage to your system can happen.

On the other hand wiring the outdoor sensor into your tstat can give you added control you may not get when wiring it directly into the HP. For instance I can lock-out my aux heat from running until we reach a certain temp - a setting I can change with a few button pushes. More importantly I can lock out the heat pump when we reach a certain low temp to gain most economy - which changes based on propane price for my backup aux furnace.

Regardless, tstat hookups can be complex, so be careful.
