Trane XL16I blowing ice cold while on heat
Hey I am having a similar problam. I have a Trane 16i 2 stage electric heatpump.. I woke last night to my heat blowing AC. I had it set at 63 and it was working well.. then I heard my outside unit make a long wining sound like it was struggling to kick on, then it would blow cold. Then I set it to 82 and aux heat kicked in and after 15 minutes it started to warm up, then it would reset and start all over... this went about 3-4 times... unit is less than 3 years old.

I have had 5 techs look and say there is no problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you have had 5 HVAC service people look at your unit and they said you do not have a problem I have no idea how I would doupt there word. It is somewhat normal for a heatpump to go into defrost from time to time depending upon how it is setup. Sometimes the installer will bring on emergency heat to compensate for the cold air flow during the reverse cycle defrost mode.

The next time a service person is there have them change the program or wiring so the unit provides a heat strip or two during the defrost mode. This will stop the cold air you feel.

Thanks.. I will print this and hand it to the next service tech... I am going to try one more person, then buy a new unit I guess.. I live in Florida so even at the coldest it gets maybe 25 once a year. Just don't understand...

That is a good unit you have. It is not the units fault but the people that installed it did not set it up correctly.

Urbaneco180: I concur / hvac1000. This unit is real good system. If you need to go a step further. Find Trane company in your area and ask them to send out a Field rep to help you.

Unless it's a Goodman, it will last much longer than 3 years. For the best results find a Trane dealer.
