My thermostat worked when it was set on "cool"

Hi

I bought this home (built around 1990) last June. The seller did not leave any manuals of operation. The heat/cool system (with gas heat) looks like it is "original". It worked well in summer, though I could not figure out how to "program" all the choices on the thermostat. Now I cannot get the heat to come on. I cannot guess if it is the thermostat or the gas furnace that is not working and do not know how to find out.

Can you help me?
