Is something wrong: A/C fan runs when furnace is heating?
During Thanksgiving, I was looking at my mother's energy consumption and I noticed her electricity bill was astronomical (approximately 3,000 kwh per month). While checking various issues throughout her home, I noticed an issue with her heating and air conditioning systems.

My mother's home has two a/c condensing units and two furnaces. I noticed the fans to both of her a/c condensing units cycled on when the related gas furnace began heating her home. Is it possible there is a problem with the thermostats?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Sounds like there is a problem with the A/C units running at the same time as the furnaces. In a very rare case with special thermostats that can actually happen. Many times houses are too humid or for health purposes more moisture needs to be removed from the home at sometimes during the Heat season.

Since both units are doing this and having the special conditions that would require special thermostats to run the A/C with the heat at the same time is very rare I would suspect someone wired the units incorrectly and you should have a HVAC professional do a on site inspection and make corrections.

Now all this can be tossed out the window if the A/C units in question are heat pumps which are designed to heat in the winter. Best to get it checked now before more $$$ is spent needlessly on utilities.
