I am trying to help a friend with a heating problem. He has a Coleman Model 3500A816 electric furnace with a heat pump which are controlled by a Honeywell Chronotherm T8611G1103 thermostat. It appears that the heating elements are not being turned on because the air from the registers is not very warm. The thermostat is set for heat and the fan for auto.

When the inside temp is below the programmed temp, the heat pump and the fan come on and the Aux Heat light on the thermostat comes on but the air from the registers is not very warm. It takes a long time for the inside air temp to rise.

If the thermostat switch is set to EM Heat, the heat pump turns off and the fan and the heating elements are turned on and air from the registers is warm.

I suspect that the problem is the sequencer but could the thermostat be the problem?

Actually the way it is wired is somewhat normal. It runs the heat pump as much as possible to conserve energy and forces you to turn on the emergency heat (uses more energy) when you feel the need for a warmer home.

Now this setup wiring can be changed but I do not recommend a homeowner do it. If you want the system to work with both the heat pump and electric heat automatically I recommend you call a heating contractor who has knowledge of heat pump systems and there wiring to do the job. It can get very confusing real quick and cause problems if you do not know exactly what you are doing. It involves more than just moving a wire and you also have to reprogram the type of system etc.
