I know NOTHING about a/c units, I'm trying to do it myself.
OK. I think the motor to the fan is going out or is out. The fan on the unit needs a boost to spin. When I spin the fan (outside unit) to push air out, the house will not cool off and it blows only warm air. When I spin the fan the other way where it sucks the outside air in, it cools off the house but the system won't cut off when its automatic. The contactor and capacitor where replaced yesterday. [F]If the fan on the unit is spinning the wrong way (sucking air in) and I run the system will it hurt my A/C unit? If you have suggestions please help me with simple terms (I don't speak HVAC). I'm trying to fix this myself with no knowledge of system. I haven't gotten to replacing the motor due to costs.

My suggestion, Find another HVAC contractor to look at your system, like getting a second opinion. No one here can absolutelty give you a diagnostic of your system without first seeing it in action. Second opinion, look for free diagnostic estimations first. Good luck.

If your outdoor fan is running backward it is defeating the purpose that the motor is for. The fan is used to cool the freon that is in the outdoor unit and the blades are made such as to to the best job by blowing up. So the answer to your question is YES it can harm your compressor, because it will run quite a bit hotter than it should.

But this does not mean that your motor is going bad, the capacitor is what make the motor start on it's own, if you have to turn the fan to make it run that sure sounds like the capacitor is bad. You say it is new, I have seen capacitors go bad in a short period.

One other thing, I didn't not understand your post completely, about the heat and cool and not turning off on auto, so if you would state your problem again and explain it better I might be able to help more.

When the fan runs clockwise (sucking air in) the house cools off. But the a/c (when termostat is set on auto) won't switch off- the a/c will stay on for hours with no break. When the fan runs counterclockwise (pushing air out) the inside vents only blow hot air.

Is your fan on the top of your unit or is it a unit that blows out the side?

It is not good for it to run backwards it will run hot. Probably will not cause any short term damage, but long term to the compressor

Also, are you changing any wires to get it to spin the other way or just starting it the other way with a stick?

Just with a stick. What is the compressor? Is it expensive and hard to replace?

How long can I do this before serious damage happens? You think I can run it for a few hours a time until 2maro without hurting it too bad or should I just deal with the heat? Its just a money issue really

I have seen some run like that for yrs, intill they were fixed so running it overnight will probably not kill it. But I would not let it run like that if it was mine.
