If the breaker trips immediately after resetting that is most likely a sign of another problem and not a defective breaker. That problem could be a short in the wiring or it could be a problem with the ac unit itself. Pull the disconnect outside and reset the breaker. If the breaker continues to trip it's a problem with the wiring between the panel and the disconnect. If breaker does not trip, the problem is most likely in exterior unit itself. Problem in unit could be wiring but is most likely a defective compressor.

What other appliances could be drawing from the location of the A/C. Sometimes it's a whole room or just one wall, but if other appliances (anything using electricty) are on when the ac goes on, that may be your problem. Try turning off all the appliances and then start up the ac. Turn on appliances (lampst, computer, etc) one at a time and when the ac shuts off, you will need to make sure to turn off other appliances before putting the ac on.

This same thing happened to me with a vacumn cleaner that would shut everything down when I turned it on. I had to make sure other stuff was off before I used the vacumn.
