Hello,

I live in a two story home and the heat is only coming out of the top floor vents. I can feel a light breeze through the bottom floor vents. Any ideas as to what might be the problem?

Check and make sure nothing is covering the return air vent on the 1st floor, not knowing how the ductwork is set up make it kind of hard,, is there only 1 furnace for both floors?

Answer wmproops question. Also, if only one furnace, is it located upstairs or downstairs. How many thermostats. One up and one down? If one furnace with two thermostats, you have electronic dampers to control airflow to main floor and upstairs. Could have a bad damper motor or control.

I have one furnace situated in the garage. I also only have one thermostat. Also, I turned off my heater becaue there was an "over-heating" smell in my 2nd floor.

What is a return air vent? Do you know of any websites I could access that might give me a visual?

Do you have kids that have a habit of putting things in the vents? Maybe your duct work has become disconnected or plugged.

Now that you mention it, I do have a 3 year old who I've caught attempting to throw things into the heater vent. My 2nd floor vents are in the ceiling, so they wouldn't be able to get anything into those. But my 1st floor vents are in the floor. However, air isn't coming out of any of the bottom floor vents. Perhaps something has become disconnected near the furnace? Could it be a fuse?

If it was a fuse, the 2nd floor heat wouldn`t be working either. Usually the return air vent /vents are bigger than the supply. With the furnace running take a tissue and go around to every vent on 1st floor, a supply vent will be blowing (even if only a little) and the supply vent/vents should pull in or try to suck the tissue into the vent. Let us know

wmproop meant RETURN vent/vents. Please follow his advice.

There may also be manual dampers to adjust airflow between up and downstairs. Look at all accessible duckwork(most likely near furnace) and let us know if you see any handles or levers on the ductwork.

Are you certain that the furnace blower is running? The heat you are feeling at the upper registers could be the result of heat simply rising through the duct system. Set system selector to off, fan selector to on, and see if the blower runs.
