Furnace kicks on and off smell smoke
My furnace is attempting to light. It kicks on for about 10 seconds, then shuts down and I can smell smoke. It is a natural gas furnace, so please no replies about how an oil burning furnace smells when it kicks on.
It is Christmas day, no heat in the house... Please help!

Looks as if I have an entirely different issue.
The furnace I am dealing with is a Payne 90. /i'm getting a 3-1 error code which tells me that the limit switch or the flame roll on switch is bad.
The burners ignite, the flame starts rolling, but the blower will not kick in.
Can I run a jumper wire to bypass the limit switch?
Is there another way to verify it is the limit switch?
Another way to bypass the limit switch?
Any downside to bypassing the limit switch?
/Thanks!!

Well you could briefly and temperary, just to check it out,, but very unsafe to let it run. Most limit switches can be reset. Sometimes you can tap the limit switch lightly with a screwdriver handle and unstick it,and also rollout `s have a button between the 2 wire post that can be reset,, good luck and let us know

OK... bypassed the limit switch and everything functioned properly... fan kicked on, but blower motor would not engage. More smoke.
I think there is some sort of control, either heat activated which would be a mechanical switch the fan would wire to, or a circuit board that times out the motor on heat start up.
Any thoughts?

So the furnace burners ignite, but the blower never kicks on? If this is the case, your furnace is getting hot(causing the smoke smell) enough to trip the high limit. Try jumping r to g on the control board , then check for 120v to blower motor(between heat and neutral terminals on board). IF you are getting power to the blower motor, I would check capacitor, but odds are your blower motor is shot.
With power off to furnace, can you spin the blower wheel easily by hand?

I think the FREE success rate found here makes pay sites seem.. silly...
Check the circuit board for evidence of failure. You may have to remove it from the housing on older models. This sort of thing can make for one stinky genie...

Of course now no one has any idea what you are talking about since I deleted the thread. But some silly person came here to advertise their paid site to answer question.
