    Furnace Exhaust Pipe
    :confused:I just had a new furnace put in which replaced the original (31 year old). The exhaust pipe was replaced by a white PVC pipe which sticks out of the roof. The old exhaust pipe had a little top on the pipe. This PVC pipe is open. Is this okay? I'm concern with it open and exposed to the UV rays.

    This is somewhat standard for the exhaust/flue pipe install. Usually the contractor will install an elbo on the end or turn the pipe down to prevent water from entering. The install manual that came with your unit that should have been left on the job site will have further information about the proper termination of the exhaust.

    ON the 2" PVC furnace exhaust pipe coming out of my wall, there is no filter on it to keep out insects or rodents, it is just open. Will I cause a problem with ice buildup through condensation freezing on it if I put a plastic filter designed to keep out animals and insects ? I live near Chicago where the weather gets wel below zero at times.

    Yes I have seen many freeze over.

    So what are you suggesting - just leave it open ? Won't the insects then have full access to the pipe and then my house through the furnace or is there another way to filter them out and still prevent ice buildup ?
