    Cracked heat exchanger
First time user... Quick question. I have a carrier gas furnace (roof unit) circa 1979. We have been told we have a cracked heat exchanger. The technician showed my husband. He said that since our unit is so old, they can not buy a replacement part, so our only option is to spend the $15K to replace the whole HVAC unit. THis seems a little extreme to me. Can I get a new Heat exchanger and save my family some $$$ we don't have to spend on a new HVAC unit. Also to add, we have purchased a Carbon Minoxide detector. I just want my unit fixed. Any help is appreciated.

It depends on the age of the unit, it may be pretty tough to find one for an older unit. The next problem is that if you do find one it WILL be very expensive not to mention freight and labor costs. The replacement heat exchanger most likely will not have any warranty,so if it fails in a year you are pretty much screwed!

You would be much better off updating the system. Call in several companys, maybe other options on a cheaper unit? Maybe a split system?

Contact a carrier vendor and ask them if the have a heat exchanger for your roof top unit, provide the model and serial number.

Before you do anything in the way of replacing the entire unit at least get three bids and if you don't like them get some more. Also get some refferences from the company and call the people.

Heat Exchanger [ 1 Answers ]

I have a gas pack and I need to find out if the heat exchanger is under warranty. It is a comfortmaker, Mod# PGAA24DIKG, SN L973826975. I have found out that the SN is directly related to the systems warranty. The new part is about $600, and I would like to avoid this cost if it is warranted still.
