I replaced the contactor on outside unit it will not go on unless we hold the 2 button like things down. Once we let go it turns back off.. What could it be now

My outside heating/air unit will not turn on . I opened the panel and if I push this little spring loaded thing it contacts with a small circular object and the unit kicks on, when I release it turns off. I think maybe the condesor motor is going bad, while a/c is on sometimes it spins for just a few seconds and shuts back off if I tap the top of the shroud it stays on, Sometimes it jerks all over trying to kick in?
