    HIPPA & friends
I was currently conversing with friends who are also healthcare providers regarding another friend's sick child. This child is not under any of our care. The only information we know about the child is what the mother has told us. During the conversation, myself and another friend were unaware the child was sick, so the 3rd person told us what was going on with the child. I remind you, this child is not our patient, so we have no access to their health records. Is this a HIPPA violation to discuss this with others being that we are in the health field? My understanding of HIPPA is the PHI (protected health information) is protected... not what you tell your friends about your child's illness. Am I correct?
