With XP and Vista you can install to any drive on the system. However, you might have problems booting from that drive, especially on a different PC. Why do you want to do this?

I really can't think of any pros. The only reasons I can see to do it is to a) have a backup you can immediately boot to or b) have a drive you can boot from that works on multiple PCs.

For the former I would do it differently by using Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost to create a clone of your OS partition and use that for restoration. For the latter, it will only work if all the PCs have the same equipment.
