I dyed my hair black and it looks horrible. I have natural blonde hair and I really want it back... can I just buy a box of the same colour as my natural hair and dye it back? Any suggestions?

If you want to go from black to blonde, it requires a double process (bleaching and toning). You will need to bleach your hair to yellow stage and apply a blonde toner. Anything other than that will result in an unpleasant color. This two-step coloring process should only be attempted by professionals. If possible, go to a salon and it get professionally done.

You don't have to get it done by a professional. I had black hair before and now I'm back to a gorgeous blonde color. I have NEVER in my life got my hair professionally dyed.. so if you don't feel like spending about $75- $100 to get your hair colored... go to a beauty store or pharmacy store and spend about $25 and buy Garneir Blonde with bleach in it and a box of the color you want. Put the blonde with bleach in your hair first. It will say to leave in your hair for about 30 minutes... since your hair is black I would leave it in for about 40 minutes. Wash it out. Wait a couple days, put the other color in your hair that you want. Leave the color in for as long as it says. If you want you hair lighter leave it in aabout 5-10 minute shorter.. if you want it darker leave it in about 10 minutes longer.

I have dyed my hair a million and one times. And I never got damaged hair from using Garneir or Herbal Essence Hair Dye. My aunt is a hair stylist and she even says that my hair is veery healthy and she doesn't know why because I dye my hair a lot. But yeah.. don't be afraid to try and do it by yourself. :]

Ladies, if you have dark and want to go blonde, minus the brassy tones, it would be best to get it professionally done. Hair Bleaching is a very difficult process to do and should be left to a hair stylist. If you attempt to do it yourself you may damage your hair. So please put away the at-home hair coloring products and head for the salon.

I've never been here before. I became a member just to post this. All you ladies saying not to try this hair coloring at home must be stylists. I have not been to a stylist in years. If you were rolling on my budget, you wouldn't either. I have had my hair every length every style and every color. I have several family and friends who have gone to school for hair and there is not much they can do after all that schooling as far as coloring that I can not do in my own bathroom. By the way, my hair is very healthy, black at the moment... will be blonde next. It's hair coloring... not brain surgery!

I had such a laugh to your answer - GREAT!! I agrit that we all should watch the expenses, and do as much as we can manage ourselves.

Now, I have a question for you plse: Is hot and humid as he-l where we have relocated to - an my hair is a flippin nightmare now.

It is a few inches below my shoulders [long], and used to be VERY QUICK AND EASY to style - blow-wave dead straight in a dry climate...

Now, since you sound very knowledgeable, please give me the step-by-step way to get this hair of mine straight. Perhaps you would also like to advise me on some good products, that actually work for a change?

What we are dealing with is wavy and frizzy terrible hair in this humidity - man!!

Anyway, ANY STYLEING TECHNIQUES / TIPS will be VERY much appreciated, before I go crazy!!

    Thanks a bunch

I Am A Stylist And If You Had Fixed As Many At Home " I Thought I Knew What I Was Doing" Screw Ups Then You Would See Why Hair Coloring Is An Art. Three Different People Can Use The Same Hair Color And Get Three Different Results... one Of Which Can Be Hydrolized , Mushy Hair That Falls Out... if Ya Want to Take Your Chances With These Do It Yourself Hair Divas' Go Ahead , But Be Sure To Be Able Tell The Stylist Exactly What You Used When You Go To Have It Fixed. It's Not Rocket Science , But There Are Things One Needs To Know And Which Box To Choose Isn't One Of Them! Coloring For The First Time On Your Natural Hair Can Be Done But You Are Talking About Color Correction And That Doesn't Come In A Box.

Oh, And No You Can't, Because Color Doesn't Lift Color... it Has To Be Lifted And You Won't Get Back To A Very Light Blonde In One Process.

Don't die it just yet what you need is to go to the hairdressers and get your hair stripped it just takes the colour out because if you just die your hair staright from black back to your natural colour it will go ginger or it just won't work :)

If you died your hair black, dying over it in the natural color will just add more color ontop which will just damage your hair...
u'd hafta strip it of the color which can really damage your hair...
You can always grow out the hair... and look like a skunk for a while :p
But the best suggestion would be to go to a hair stylest and ask if your hair is healthy enough to strip it and then re-dye it your natural color

The process depends on the length of your hair. If it's short (chin length or above) I wouldn't spend money to get it professionally stripped. I paid $300 for that service once, and discovered a $7 product at Wal-Mart that did the same thing. It's called simply "Haircolor Remover Kit." The photo on the box looks like it's from the 1960's, but trust me, it works. It's a very slow-acting bleach, so it's easy to monitor, and it has never damaged my fine-textured hair. For longer hair, though, I would leave it to the pros.

First, I suggest devoting a weekend to this process. Pick a weekend you do not plan to go out, unless you like to wear hats!

DAY 1: Use the Haircolor Remover Kit. Apply to ends first. Cover your head in plastic wrap to keep it moist, but don't bother with the blow dryer. (I tried it once, and it didn't make a worthwhile difference.) Your hair will end up orange at the ends, canary yellow near the roots, and will be very fluffy and strange-feeling.

Give your hair 24 hours to calm down.

DAY 2: Bleach. Use Clairol brand bleach from Sally's Beauty Supply, the kind in the blue packet. Blue will cancel out the orange tones. Use 10 Vol. developer.

Then you are ready to apply the blonde haircolor of your choice. Remember, when you are done, condition like crazy! Best of luck.

I'm thinking of having my hair done blonde my hair is dark brown nearly black at the moment I have been recommended to have my hair stripped which will leave my hair and orangey colour for a while and then after a few days or so I will be able to have blonde applied this all seems qwite simple my hingair is in qwite good condition and I am going to deep condition it everyday for a few days before I get my hair stripped so hopefully it does not cause too much damage to my hair do you think that this is a good idea? Have you any suggestions on what I should do to get the blonde look that I want as it is something that I am determend to do without taking too long, as I don't want to wait for it to grow out that will take too long and don't want to be walking around with my roots half way down my head!

I did this just today (AGAIN). Color strippers don't fully work on black dye; if there is any black dye left in your hair (even if you can't see it) no matter what color you try to dye to, it will turn black again.

You will have to use bleach... I used Nice N Easy Born Blonde Maxi. I used both packets of the powder. FOLLOW THE PACKAGE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY! Keep the solution about 1 inch away from your roots/scalp for the first 20 minutes. It will also help to put a plastic bag on your head after you put the lightener on; the heat helps it develop faster. After 20 minutes I pulled the mixture through to my roots, waited ten more minutes, and I was at the gold stage. I washed, dried, and put a box of dark ash blonde dye on it; and I love it.

Afterwards, do some deeeeeeeeep conditioning masque (I like "Last Call", by Beyond The Zone; you can find it at Sally's). Last Call also has a bomb diggity moisturizing shampoo now~

    Hope this helped!
