Dying 2 tone hair?

I was a model for my hairdresser and she dyed the front of my hair underneath my fringe blonde by tinting it twice, I would like to dye my hair red but don't know how to go about it, would I lighten it all and then go red or dye my blonde brown and the red? Please help in any way you can. Thanks.
