Usually your roots will pick up any lighter, red or gold color better because there is no previous color on them. Applying the same dye to your hair again will not blend the roots to ends. Color does not lift (remove) existing color, so if the ends of your hair are darker than your roots you either have to lighten your hair or color your roots darker. If you already have color on your hair then you can either use a color remover--this will only lift the color that exists on your hair, it will not lighten the pigment of your natural hair underneath (so you basically would be back to a warped shade of your natural level, and would then have to recolor your entire head). Otherwise you can lighten your hair (bleach)to your desired level--this will remove the color and the pigment from natural hair. From there you can either color it with blond, or just use a toner if you have lightened with bleach. Best bet is to do it in salon, because with color remover and lighteners you are never guaranteed to get what you want! ( I work in a salon and we get a lot of corrections to do from people layering color or trying to remove it themselves). Definitely more expensive but if you are picky then its your best bet. Other choice if you don't want to lighten or remove is to apply a color to just your roots to match the rest. Don't choose a color with red (or even some golds) because it will grab faster on the roots. Get a natural brown that is the same level/darkness as the rest of your hair below the roots, just apply to roots and blend into the rest of your hair for the last few minutes. This will blend your roots to the color of your ends. Hopefully this helps!
