Might be moles. They aren't that big and eat the roots. Have you noticed any raised areas near the holes (tunnels)?

Moles possible but Chipmonks is also likely. I rid my yard of them using a device I bought at Menards. It looks like a green plastic thumb tack about a foot long. You install the thumb tack in the lawn near the affected area, its solar powered. The thing makes a small vinration twice a minute, it drives the critter crazy and they leav, probably for your neighbors yard. You can also try coyote urine bought from a hunting supply store.

I live in Oregon so not familiar with eastern critters but I can tell you it isn't moles. Moles push mounds of dirt around the holes and they don't eat roots. They eat earthworms and insects exclusively.
Carefully dig out a hole and look for a tunnel. If there is a tunnel system underground it will confirm some sort of rodent. The size of the tunnel will tell you which size of rodent.
How large is the area where the grass has died? Is it a circular pattern or does it seem to follow a tunnel or pattern?
After you have the answers to these questions, call the agricultural department of your local university. They should be able to help sort it out.
